How did I get into chiropractic? Well, I always wanted to be some kind of health care provider, and at first I thought about dentistry, but when I was 19 I was hugging my then girlfriend and I decided to pick her up a couple of inches off of the floor by bending backward at my low back, and in the process, I leaned back a little bit and all of a sudden my low back went out on me and I experienced severe low back pain. It was so bad that I was hunched over and I could barely breathe. Well, although the pain dissipated slightly, I lived with this pain for three months. I mean, any sudden movement would cause me sharp low back pain. It just so happened that, at that time, my girlfriend was going to a chiropractor for neck and back injuries that she sustained as a result of a car accident for which she was reaping excellent benefits. Because chiropractic was helping her I asked my dad if I could go see the chiropractor as well. He told me: "No, just go to our family doctor (M.D.)." So, I did as I was told, went to the M.D., explained my pain/symptoms/problems to him, and then he examined me and took six x-rays of different angles of my low back only to find..."Nothing." Huh???, I thought. Anyway, he told me that sometimes things just move out of place and the pain should just go away with time. He then proceeded to write me a prescription for painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories, which I never had filled. I didn't want to resort to/rely on prescription medication for my pain, so I toughed it out for three months and occasionally used an over-the-counter medication called Doan's Back Pain Pills. They didn't help, and after three months of pain which was worsened with any sudden movement, I begged my Dad to let me go to the chiropractor my girlfriend was going to. He finally felt sorry enough for me to send me there. The funny thing is that he had been to a chiropractor before and had sent my sister to one a few years earlier for treatment of shin splints as a result of participating in high school track and field, and they both benefited from the treatment with good results.
So, I finally get to the chiropractor after living in pain for three months, I explain my low back symptoms to him, as well as a right shoulder pain I was feeling, he examines me, and then proceeds to adjust my low back. It doens't happen like this for everyone, but I was a chiropractic miracle. The chiropractor laid me on my side and, brought one of my legs up, and then adjusted my low back
